Jeffrey & Rachel

The stationary set for Jeffrey & Rachel’s wedding invitations included an invitation and response card, which was plate printed at a local shop. I did hand calligraphy for the envelope address, lined the envelopes with silver paper, and created card enclosures out of vellum and Japanese paper.

A bit about designing the cards: Jeffrey and Rachel met while studying abroad in Tokyo, Japan, even though Jeffrey is from California and Rachel is from England. Their venue for the ceremony was at Hakone Gardens in Saratoga, California, a Japanese Tea Garden set atop a hill amongst the Redwoods. I asked them what their theme for the wedding was, and Rachel described something between Art Nouveau and 1920’s flapper style. I was instantly reminded of the works of early Art Nouveau artist Aubrey Beardsley, whose stark line drawings and slightly twisted subject matter resonated with both Rachel and me. Rachel wanted koi fish and Japanese maple leaves on the invitations, since those were both present in October at Hakone Gardens.
